Today was supposed to be Island of Lost Souls, but I wasn’t able to get it in time to watch today. Luckily, my friend Margarita had recommended Nightmare on Elm Street 2, which I’d never seen before and was able to get.
The movie is about Jesse whose family moves into Nancy’s old house on Elm Street. Jesse has nightmares, but instead of Freddy trying to kill him, Freddy tries to use him to wreak havoc on the waking world. When I say “havoc” I mean murder, like a ton of murder. Why would Freddy do that when he can just hang out in people’s dreams and kill them in way cooler ways? Who knows?
Nightmare on Elm Street 2 kind of feels like someone had a bunch of really cool ideas for a very gay-themed horror movie, wrote half of it and then realized they actually had to make it be part of a pre-existing franchise. The only other Elm Street movie I’ve seen is Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), which definitely beats 2 in terms of fun surreal deaths, use of dream logic and creating an easy to understand mythology.
But you know what? Who cares. I don’t. 2 has a LOT in its favor.
(Spoilers, blood and butts to follow.)
I’m doing the 31 horror movie October challenge thing and writing about it on this new tumblr.
